ANNUAL PARISH MEETING
Minutes of the meeting held on Wednesday 11th May at 6.30pm in Kirkby on Bain Primary School Hall
Those present: Councillor Briscombe (Chair), Councillors Thomas, Saunders, Cole and clerk, Miss Kulwicki.
Public: 30 members of the public were present. Member of public signed the guest list.
Members started arriving at 6:10pm; tea, coffee and cake was served until 6:45. Members of the council and the parish had informal chats where they raised their views to councillors.
1) Introduction: Councillor Briscombe thanked everyone for coming, he was so pleased to see so many people in attendance. He thanked Carol, Jill and Pauline for providing and serving the tea, coffee and cakes. He explained the running order for the evening and introduced the guest speaker Edward Mayor who is a local Historian, Artist and author.
2) Guest speaker – Mr Edward Mayor – Told all present it was a pleasure to be here. He first started his research into Kirkby on Bain after walking his dog in the area, which resulted in the historic map he put together. (they were on sale at the meeting) He prepared a very interesting talk to all present some of the key information included was:
* Conway Walter found 2 mammoth teeth in the area.
* There are 6 Kikrby’s in Lincolnshire, Kirkby meaning with church and Bain meaning Bright and clear. (River Bain)
* In 1937 there was 9 acres of open water.
* In 1949 Arthur Mee’s County of infinity charm book left out Kirkby On Bain and only used the 5 other Kirkby’s.
* In 1712 Queens Anne was in reign and oversaw the rebuilding of the church, which has been rebuilt many times.
* William the Conqueror was protected by a body guard who was named Vicount Ebrington.
* The rectory has 20 families listed in stained glass windows which was sold in 1754 for £50.00 and no one has been able to trace them.
* The first rector of the parish was Thomas Best.
* Some of the bricks which were used to build Tattershall Castle are in some of the cottages in Kirkby On Bain.
* In 1802 Kirkby on Bain exported sand and gravel to Coningsby, Woodhall Spa, Horncastle Tattershall and Thorpe by barge.
* Some barges where 7ft long and the luxury ones had brass bands. Barges stop being used when there was an uptake in the railway.
* In 1713 the school thanked Richards Brocklesby for funds to get a fit person to teach the poor children of the town.
* In 1968 the old school house was sold.
* He asked members present to maybe set up and historic group or a couple of people to take away this information and do some more research as it could lead to some very interesting findings.
3) Conclusion of meeting – Councillor Thomas thanked Mr Edward Mayor for his excellent account of the history of the local area.
Some questions were asked by local parishioners about the history of the houses.
